very sturdy with 16 different levels of resistance
It arrived fast and comes with everything you need to assemble(takes about 15-30 minutes)very easy. We picked this exercise bike over the Schwinn 131 since it looked more durable and had a lifetime frame warranty vs the 10 year Schwinn, this bike also has 16 levels of resistance another big plus. It has 24 different programs about half of them are very useful the others are user defined and some other ones. It also has bodyfat/pulse monitors on the lower handles. I like how quiet the bike is and changing resistance is very quick once you digitally change it. I like the magnetic resistance, some older or cheaper bikes used other methods that just didn’t feel right but this bike feels right. I think for the price this is a quality exercise bike, the recumbent bikes are too expensive right now imo, but are suppose to be fantastic for people with injuries,older people. This bike is also easier to move than a treadmill it has wheels on the front where you just have to lift the back and it moves easily. The monitor is easy to read and input numbers.

bad for tall people
the product arrived quickly, and was easy to assemble, and, to my surprise, worked on the first try (the electronics). the only problem is that the maximum height for the seat is not high enough. i’m 5′ 10″ and can use it, but it’s not the ideal length for me. a taller person would probably have to send it back.

Great Bike!
We have had this excercise bike for over six months and have had no problems at all. It is lightweight, so it is easy to move around the living room. It is also almost completely silent which makes it easy to watch tv at the same time. I am now purchasing one for my mom, too.

Not satisfied
I had the product for 2 weeks before I started having problems with it. Last night I had to take it apart in order to tight some parts that were shaking and making the most irritating noises, and I am talking about parts you would not touch on the initial assembly, those were manufacturing issues. I had to repeat the process 5 times in the few weeks I had it. So unless you have good handyman skills, get something else. It is a nice looking product but as I started using, it really showed its poor quality. If I had the chance I would return it. Not worth your money.

Just Right
I searched locally, but all the stationary bikes in my area had too many bells and whistles. One even had video game controls on the handles so you could play a game while exercising. Not being a member of Gen X, I prefer the low tech version. This Schwinn 101 is quiet enough to carry on a conversation or listen to the TV without having to raise the volume. The action is smooth. The seat can be adjusted many ways to suit your style or comfort needs. My only complaint is, that at 5′2″ the handle bars are so far away that it puts extra strain on my back to reach them.

Assembly tools cause woes.
As a frequent purchaser of put-it-together-yourself items, I find that tools included for these items are usually cheap devices of a pressed metal variety. So, when I opened my horribly mangled box, I was not surprised at the lack of good solid tools included. Trying each tool once and noting the considerable wear on the tools each time I turned a nut or tightened a screw, I quickly scrounged in my local tool box and produced hearty tools that easily completed the job.

It took 1 hour to put the bike together myself and except for the lack of good tools the other components that came in the mangled and holey box, were of solid design. It is whisper quiet while in use and the bike has a fairly small space requirement. The seat was a little hard, but supportive, if you don’t like hard seats you should order a seat cover.

If you purchase this bike keep in mind that you should have some good tools and a minimal understanding of bikes in general.

Good so far
This is the first time buying an exercise bike for me, and I wanted to make sure that my bike is of good quality. So far, this seems to be the case with my Schwinn 101. I was a little hesitant at first, because some of the reviews seemed negative. However, much of the criticism comes from the poor packaging and shipping, not from the mechanics of the bike itself.

Because I actually bought mine from a local store (for cheaper than the Amazon price), I was able to circumvent the shipping problems. Plus, the local store guys assured me that I could bring it right back if anything was damaged (the packaging was kind of flimsy) or missing. So I would recommend that if anyone is considering buying this bike to try getting it locally. It could save so many hassles.

Set up seemed easy enough (my husband did it for me in about 30 minutes). The bike seems sturdy and I like the sleek, simple design. For the first couple times riding it, I could hear a “ping” noise from the pedals, but I think this is gone now. I am very happy with the way the bike works (caveat: I’ve only had it for about 2-3 weeks)–I get some serious exercise from it. I’m impressed with how the handle bars count my pulse and the monitor display is helpful in knowing how much exercise I’m getting. Also, it’s really quiet. I didn’t think the water bottle holder would be a big deal, but it is! It makes hydrating so much easier, which helps me exercise better. The resistance also seems adequate. Mind you, I’m a small person without much leg muscle, but still, using one of the programmed exercises for 20 minutes kicks my butt! And the highest resistance level on these programs is 5 (out of 8 levels). All in all, I’m very happy with this bike helping me get regular exercise.

Fairly satisfied
I had read reviews about the bike being wobbly, or difficult to put together, or not having the ability to select a display other than scan. The bike I got had very minor shipping damage which does not appear to impair the bike’s performance, or its useful life. The bike’s four floor pads are designed so that if it wobbles, simply rotate the floor pad to eliminate the unwanted movement. The electronics are simple to operate, and yes, you can choose which aspect of your ride you’d like to moniter. (ie. time, distance, calories burned, heart rate, etc.) I am 5′9″ and weigh 240, the bike is a good fit for me and supports me sturdily as I ride. If it weren’t for the shipping damage, the bike would be perfect.

Decent for the price
This bike is decent or the price. It works quite well - the range of resistance is pretty good and the heart rate monitor is decent so long as you keep your hands on the monitor points for at least a minute, otherwise it starts over trying to evaluate your heart rate. The main part of the unit is pre-assembled and the remainder isn’t too difficult.

The person complaining that the tension control does nothing probably didn’t follow the instructions to hook up the tension cable during setup, and to everyone complaining about the display cycling through the various readouts: just hit the “Mode” button! This let’s you choose what it displays, and it stops the automatic cyclcing!

A few things that I have found annoying:

* The seat is uncomfortable. Maybe it’s because I’m tall, but the main thing I want on a device that I’m going to use a lot is a comfy seat. I was not impressed at all with the one that came with it. If anyone has found a way to attach a better seat please leave a comment!

* If you stop using it briefly to take a short break the display clears within a minute or two, losing the estimated calories burned so far. This is quite annoying.

* After using it for a while, mine has developed a small rattle/tick as I turn the pedals. I haven’t cared enough to open it to see if it’s correctable. Sometimes it goes away.

* Inside there is some kind of band that acts as a chain between some of the parts. After a bit of use this band seems to rub against some of the internal parts and deposits black filings on my carpet. They don’t stain, but occasional vacuuming is required.

* The plastic for the shell is a bit brittle and easy to crack.

* The heart-rate monitor takes a while to recover and find your accurate heart rate if you remove your hands from the monitor points on the handle bars.

Overall it’s stood up fairly well and for the price it’s definitely a good starter bike. I would give it 4/5 if not for the quality of the seat.

Still working good
I bought this a couple of months ago. Not expecting much for this price. But this thing is still working good for me and my wife. We are both under 180lbs (it labels ‘not for use over 250lbs’) and 5-8″/5-10″ tall. The seat is good for us, after a first-time ache use…
There is no light on the display, but the (ordinary) light in our room is sufficient to read the panel.
